For OS X users:

1. Close iTunes.

2. Open Terminal and execute the following terminal command:
defaults write com.apple.iTunes hide-ping-dropdown -bool TRUE

3. If you want to restore the the arrow buttons of old, also execute the following terminal command:
defaults write com.apple.iTunes show-store-link-arrows 1

For Windows users:

1. Close iTunes.

2. Opan the Command Prompt and execute the following command:
"C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.exe" /setPrefInt hide-ping-dropdown 1

3. If you want to restore the the arrow buttons of old, also execute the following terminal command:
"C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.exe" /setPrefInt show-store-link-arrows 1
