Fix for Hash Mismatch Error from Mac App Store

Occasionally when downloading an application from the Mac App Store, users are unable to update due to a “hash mismatch” error. If you receive this error, these steps should correct the issue.

Recently when updating iPhoto, FCPX, xCode, Evernote, and other apps, users have been asking me how to fix the hash mismatch error that appears.

hash mismatch error

This is typically caused by problems introduced by the developer in using the Mac App Store and is not a problem within the application itself. For example, it is often caused by name changes and other minor issues. Following these steps should get updated.

1. Close the Mac App Store.
2. Close the problem application if open.
3. Delete all versions of the application you are trying to update from the Mac App Store by dragging them from your Applications folder into the Trash.
4. Empty your Trash.
5. Open the Mac App Store, go to your Purchased tab, and download the application again.

The majority of the time this will solve your issues. Occasionally, more complex apps may be difficult to uninstall by just dragging the files to the trash. If this occurs, search on more specific ways to uninstall that application or use a mac uninstall helping application like AppCleaner to help you remove the files.
