This is a quick ingredients list of things to try when having problems with Windows XP with SP2 and your AMD Athlon 64 Processor.

Many people have been experiencing major problems with XP with SP2 and their AMD Athlon 64 processors. Most are getting the ever famous Windows Blue Screen of Death.

A few notes on how to avoid this, or atleast personal experience thus far:
-slipstream SP2 into your XP installation, then do a clean install of XP with SP2. This is what i did after a few probs i was having with my XP that i upgraded to SP1 and then SP2. and it seems to have worked (knock on wood).

-a very key thing to always to think about. check out to see if your motherboard manufacturer has a bios update that solves the problems you are having; or even it does not list your problem, try it out. Bios updates can be saviors at times (and demons at others, hehe)..

-check your other hardware to see if perhaps that is the cause of the blue screen/lockups/freezes. You can always check your system logs and error logs in XP too to see if there are any clues to what is causing the crashes.

-make sure your motherboard drivers/chipset drivers are up to date and device drivers are too (or atleast on a stable version)

-power, make sure you have a lot of it, or atleast enough for how many other devices you are running. I’d say about $450 watts for your avg system (2 hds, 1 dvd/cd, agp video card, pci soundcard). when buying a ps, some ‘cheaper, generic’ ps makers will overrate their power supplies. try to stick to more proven names (ie antec, etc…)

if worse comes to worse, just install XP with SP1 only. I’ve heard sometimes thats the only true fix.
