XP Pro and Vista: Prevent CD burning

This tech-recipe contains a quick policy which will stop software theft by disabling CD burning options.


This steps in this tutorial will work in XP Pro or Vista.

1. Open the Group Policy Editor:
Start\Run type gpedit.msc

2. Now, move through the left pane to the following location:
User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Explorer\

3. To the right, find the key: Remove CD Burning Features.
Double-click and select enable.

This will stop users from being able to burn CDs, thus discouraging downloading on a network.
