Kubuntu: Change the Default Email Client

By default, kubuntu uses KMail as the default email client. Since I installed the KDE desktop on top of my Ubuntu installation, I wanted to keep Evolution as my default email client. I used the following steps to make this happen, but they will work for changing the default client to whichever email application you have installed.

Kubuntu: Access Google Talk with Kopete

Kopete is the KDE instant messenger client that can be used to chat with the Yahoo, AIM, MSN, ICQ and Jabber protocols. You can also utilize Kopete to chat using Google Talk by following these steps:

Kubuntu: Use Shade Instead of Maximize when Double-Clicking the Titlebar

Change the double-click action for window titlebars from maximize (which there is already a button for) to Shade. Shade pulls the window up into the titlebar to free up room on the desktop. To change the double-click setting, do the following:

Have you customized your Ubuntu computer and ended up finding that both Restart and Shut Down are missing when you click the Log Out button? Here’s how to restore them back to their rightful place:

gOS: Modify the Size of the Shelf for Better IBar Visibility

The default settings for gOS cause the icons to be quite large and require lateral scrolling to see all of your applications. You can resize the shelf to a smaller size and which will shrink the size of the icons. This will allow you to see more icons at one time.

Linux: How To Find the Default Gateway

Whether you’re troubleshooting network problems or trying to set up a VPN, knowing what address your computer has configured as the default gateway is always useful. Running a simple command from the terminal can give you this.

Ubuntu: Disable the Automatic Playing of CD and DVD Discs

Under the default settings, Ubuntu automatically begins playing CD and DVD discs when they are loaded into the CD/DVD drive. It also will automatically begin playing music files once a supported portable music player is connected. To change any (or all) of these settings to better meet your needs:

Ubuntu: Install the Ubuntu Studio Theme

If you’re tired of the default theme on Ubuntu (Human), you can put a little more snap in your desktop by using the Ubuntu Studio theme.

Ubuntu: How to Change the Computer Name

You might run into a situation that requires you to change your computer name, either because you need it to meet a naming scheme or you’re just bored with it and want something better. By following these steps, you’ll give your computer a new identity in no time.

Ubuntu: Place Trash Icon on the Desktop

Instead of having the trash icon on one of your panels, you can place it on your Ubuntu desktop for easier access. This is a great help for users whose previous operating system was Windows. It also beats trying to find the little trash icon on on of your panels.
