iPhoto 6: Set and Enable External Editor

Using an external editor such as photoshop with iphoto is a great feature. However, frequently people find that “edit in external editor” is grayed out and disabled. This tutorial will show how to enable this wonderful little feature.

The iPhoto editor is actually pretty good. Sometimes though you just need the big guns. “Edit in external editor” selection would make sense. However, frequently people find that is option is gray and disabled. Let’s fix it.

1. In iPhoto click Preferences from the iPhoto menu
2. Click the General tab
3. In the Edit Photo menu select In application…

4. Browse and select your preferred editor. I am picking photoshop CS3 here.

5. If you leave it this way, then you will always use the external editor for editing. This prevents you from using the quick, high quality tools in iPhoto. To re-enabled the default iPhoto editor, change the Edit Photo dropdown box back to In main window

6. Now you will use the iPhoto built-in editor by default and you can right-click to use the external editor.
