Safari 5: How to Install and Uninstall Extensions

Posted by David Kirk in Browsers

Safari 5 now has support for extensions. Good extensions will help expand the functionality of your browser. However, poorly coded extensions can make your browser unstable and slow. This tutorial will show the basics of installing and removing safari extensions.

Safari finally joins the world of extensions.

Installing extensions is really easy… maybe too easy.

1. First you will have to enable the extensions menu.

2. Next, download the extension in Safari
3. Click on it

4. Confirm that you want to install. Remember only to trust extensions from sources you trust.

5. Your extension will now be installed and ready for your use. You can confirm this in the extensions section of your preferences.

Uninstalling Extensions:

1. Go to the Extensions section of the Preferences
2. Select the extension you wish to delete and select Uninstall

3. Alternatively, you can just disable without uninstalling by unchecking the Enable box.

if you uninstall, how do you reinstall without re-downloading?

i can’t figure out where the extension went after uninstalling

If you uninstall, the plugin is gone.

If you want to disable without removing it completely, just uncheck the enable box that is associated with that plugin.

thank you – very happy that you’ve posted this – there is no such documentation on the apple site as yet!

I installed a few plugins. One of them seems to be crashing Safari. At this point, I can’t even get safari to open up. It crashes instantly, and uninstall / reinstall does not help. Deleting extensions folder does nothing. Every time safari tries to open, all those extensions just get brought back. How do I get around this?

    • hey.. how did you fix this? i’m having this problem right now 🙁

i can’t uninstall a facebook extension. clicking uninstall freezes the browser. where are these files located (dell mini, win xp)? anyone know? i’d like to manually delete them within the registry (i’ve had great sucess with this on other things; i’m careful).

i usually use chrome, and i know chrome files are under “mozilla” but i’m not seeing safari ones even tho its a webkit browser.

10x for that helpful information, which wasn’t posted on most of extension resolving sites/topics

Uninstall guidance directed me towards “extensions”. My Mac doesn’t have this tab. I guess it really isn’t “too easy really” as your site claims.

Your product doesn’t work that’s why I want to uninstall it. Now the uninstall guidance doesn’t work. Why am I not surprised?
