Windows Live Writer: Set Interval for Automatically Saving Drafts

Nothing sucks more than to be working on a lengthy blog posting and have something go wrong (power outage, computer lockup, etc.). All of that great work is gone. Oh the frustration! Windows Live Writer can automatically save your drafts at a preset interval. While you might not be able to completely recapture your work of blogging art, you will only have to recreate a small portion of it.

Outlook 2007: Change the Screen Location that the Desktop Alert Appears

By default, Outlook displays the Desktop Alert above the system tray on the desktop. Since I run a multiple monitor setup, I found myself rarely noticing the Desktop Alert because I was focused on applications on the other monitor. by changing the location that the Desktop Alert appears, it was more easily noticed and better served its purpose. To change where the Desktop Alert appears on your screen, follow these steps:

AIM 6: Limit Users that can Contact You

If you use AIM to chat with your friends and family, it is doubtful that you want to chat with any and everybody that uses AIM. To limit what users can contact you, follow these steps:

WinRar: Remove Items from the Explorer Context (Right-Click) Menu

When you install WinRar, it places a long list of items on your Explorer context menu. You may find that you only use a few of them and the rest are just taking up space. To keep your Explorer context menu more efficient, remove the WinRar items you don’t need by following these steps:

Vista: Lock Down the Windows Sidebar

While the Windows Sidebar is a nice piece of functional eye candy for home users, it can be an administrator’s nightmare in a business environment. Having users installing an endless amount of gadgets off of the internet can at the very least waste work time and bandwidth and a worse case scenario would be a security breach. You can limit or eliminate the Windows Sidebar and keep control of what, if any, gadgets are able to run on the users’ machines.

OpenOffice.org Calc: Add Data to Multiple Sheets

When working with spreadsheets, there is often a situation that requires the same data, text, and/or formulas to be placed on separate sheets. Examples of this would be a list of employees or formulas for monthly calculations. If you need the same data, text, and/or formulas to be on multiple sheets of your document, you can accomplish this by following these steps.

Safari for Windows: Customize the Toolbar

While the default toolbar for Safari meets most needs, if you are like me, you will want to add some more buttons to it. I am used to having a button for the home page and on for printing. To get the toolbar to better meet your needs, follow these steps:

Sprint and Motorola Q – Unable to Place Call

One of my previous recipes explained how to do an ‘unofficial’ master/hard reset on the Q. One thing I have noticed w/our Sprint Motorola Q is that after a hard reset is done, I get an error trying to use the internet or any internet-enabled apps. It shows the error: “Unable to place call”. Lets fix that!

Safari for Windows: Change Font Smoothing for Sharper Display

If the text displayed in your Safari browser isn’t looking very sharp, changing the font smoothing setting can greatly improve things. While not as crisp as Microsoft’s ClearType, it still does a fairly good job of sharpening the text displayed in the browser.
