Most NVIDIA drivers will install an entry called “NVIDIA Display” in your context menu. When people right-click on their desktop they see this useless menu setting. Here’s how to remove it.

NVIDIA, stay out of my @#$%$T^*$ context menu!

It kills me when companies decide their products are ssooooo important that I should see their software everytime I right-click. Yuck.

Here’s how to remove NVIDIA from your context menu:

    1. Click Start
    2. Click Run
    3. Type regedit in the textbox
    4. Click OK
    5. In the registry editor, go to the following key:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\NvCplDesktopContext

    6. Right click on NvCplDesktopContext and select delete
    7. Exit regedit

That’s it! When you right-click, you will no longer see NVIDIA! Whooop!

    Thanks!

This was a signifigant help as it solved a bigger problem than just not wanting to see the NVIDIA context menu.

I was not able to right click my desktop for months after installing a new OS and all the drivers (including NVIDIA) and other apps. Dr. Watson Post Mortem debugger would pop up. There was too much to figure out what the problem was and I didn't find an answer until I found this article through the Jeeves search engine by once again looking for "can't right click on desktop".

This article finally resolved the problem. I was also not able to right click on the desktop or inside an Explorer directory or choose "File". After removing the specified NVIDIA registry entry now everything works like it should.

    Glad it could help!

I have seen a ton of problems from programs adding items to the right-click context menu. I have no idea why XP is so sensitive to problems in this part of the registry.

Same here I had a problem like that once, whenever I right click the Dr. Watson Post Mortem debugger would come and then windows would freeze and I'd have to restart my computer all over again. Plus my registry got corrupted! So whenever I double clicked on a folder the search window opened up.

So I used to right click all the time (because I'd forget about Dr.Watson...) and ... the debugger would bug me again...

But after tweaking my registry everyting works perfectly fine now! Very helpful article!

Yes this is very true... especially if you have SP2 (at least that's what I think due to the amount of problems)!

and my computer restarted, but in 4 color VGA mode. I disabled the driver, restarted, but now I can;t get out of 32 color VGA. It's driving me absolutely nuts. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can go back to where I was before I clicked on the stupid NVIDIA display?
