I love spreadsheets. I use them for keeping score while playing card games, planning budgets, and calculating my grades. Google Sheets is a free alternative to Microsoft Excel that has a mobile and web version. Sheets does not have the full functionality of Excel, but it works well with the touch interface of a mobile phone. Although I would not use Sheets to manage large datasets or do any serious computation, it has the functionality that I am likely to use on the go. Google Sheets can be used offline, or it can sync with your Google Drive so that you can pull up all your Sheets on any computer or device. If you do not already have the Sheets app, you can download it by following these links for Android or iOS.

This morning I discovered that my iPhone’s memory was full. The biggest culprit was Photos, which is typical for most iPhone users. I went ahead and deleted all my photos because they all automatically back up to Google Photos. (Read my article on how to set up that free service here.)
Deleting my 200+ pictures and videos did not clear up as much memory as I thought it would, and I quickly realized that this was because Photos moves deleted photos into a Recently Deleted album for 30 days before they are actually removed from your device. This is a useful feature if you want to recover photos that you deleted accidentally. However, in my case, this meant it would take 30 days to clear up the memory I needed to download a new app. This can also be a problem if you want to erase all traces of embarrassing photos.
Gmail makes it easy to forward email messages automatically from one address to another. This may be useful in many types of situations. Personally, I have multiple email accounts for work, junk mail, and personal use. I have my phone set up so that I only receive notifications on my phone when I get a new email message in my personal account. Occasionally, I find my self waiting for an important message to come to one of my secondary email addresses. When this happens, I create a filter with a key word or the email address of the sender so that when the email message comes, it gets forwarded to my personal email, and I will be notified right away.
We are assaulted by advertisements on a daily basis. We get them in the mail, see them plastered on billboards and buses, and they clamor for our attention all over the internet. Fortunately, there is software available called Adblock Plus that will remove ads from your screen and block pop-up ads. This makes browsing the internet a much more pleasant experience. Note that this will not affect video ads on sites like Hulu.
You are on a road trip, and your fuel level is dropping lower and lower. You know you are going to have to stop for gas soon, but you want to choose a gas station that is on your way and is as cheap as possible. You are already using Google Maps for navigation, so you have your passenger search for a gas station nearby. (You are driving. Keep your eyes on the road!) Google maps will add gas stations to the map and tell you how many minutes a pit stop would tack onto your trip. Many gas stations also have pricing information. You pick the cheapest one that only adds an extra a minute or two.
Windows 7 introduced the ability to filter files by size, date modified, tags, type, and more in Windows Explorer. This is a powerful feature that helps users more easily find and manage the ever-growing mass of files that accumulates so quickly.
Windows Explorer was renamed File Explorer in Windows 8, and it was given a different interface, which made the switch from the old drop-down menu system to ribbon toolbars. Despite this, it maintained the same basic functionality. The Windows 10 File Explorer makes search filters more intuitive than ever by organizing the filters into the File Explorer ribbon.
You can use bookmarks to create internal links in Google Docs. This is a useful feature to use if you have a long document with references to other sections within the same document. For example, you could write “As we discussed in section 4.2,” and add a link to the bookmark in section 4.2 that you are referencing. This lets readers click on that text and jump to the bookmark instead of having to scroll through your document to find it. You can bookmark glossary words, figures, and more.
