PS4: Manually Update System Software using USB Thumb Drive

The Sony PS4 requires a patch to the system during setup to enable several features such as Blu-ray movie playback and other online/social features.  The PS4 can be updated via the XMB and System Update options. Additionally, it can be updated manually by downloading the update file onto a computer and USB drive for those users whose PS4 is not yet on the internet.

Updating via the XMB is always recommended and the easiest way for updating your system. However, this is an alternative way that can be used for PS4 systems that are not on the internet or have had the hard drive upgraded or replaced. For example, you may be required to do this after you do a hard drive upgrade since the system software is saved to the hard drive. Since the new blank drive will not contain system software, using this technique should allow for a manual system software update.

Although Internet access is required for a majority of the PS4’s features, many users will need to setup and configure their device without broadband access. The easiest way to accomplish this is by copying the firmware files onto a USB thumb-drive and then install through the following steps.

1. Find a USB thumb drive and be sure it’s formatted in FAT32 or FAT.  EXFat and NTFS most likely will not work.

2. Go to Sony’s PS4 firmware download page and download the file to your PC or Mac. Click the Download link to get the PS4UPDATE.PUP file.

3. On the USB thumb drive, be sure to create the following folder structure:

PS4 > Update > PS4UPDATE.PUP

To do this, just create a PS4 folder. Go into this folder and then create an Update folder. Copy the PS4UPDATE.PUP into this folder.

4. If the PS4 is on, power it off.  Plug the USB drive into your new PlayStation. Power on the system.

5. The PS4 will boot into Safe Mode where we can now update the system via the file on our USB drive.

  1. Hello! Do you know if they make any plugins to protect against hackers? I’m kinda paranoid about losing everything I’ve worked hard on. Any recommendations?|
