Playstation 3 – Use Remote Play on any Windows 7 PC

Posted by Jimmy Selix in Games

This recipe is for the Playstation3 / PS3 users out there that want to utilize the Remote Play features on their PS3.  Normally, Sony allows Vaio branded laptops the ability to connect to the PS3 via Remote Play.  With the help of 3 patched files from NTAuthority and a few basic command line inputs, we can use the Remote Play software on any PC that has a wireless network adapter. (video included)

Credit to
NTAuthority for the patch. PS3 firmware 3.30+ is required.

Requirements:

-Playstation 3 (original or Slim) with firmware 3.30 or higher
-PC/Laptop running Windows 7(32bit/64bit) and WiFi adapter
-Both devices on same network

Software:

-Remote Play Software (download from Sony here)
-NTAuthority Patched Dlls and EXE (orig download from PS3 Hax, mirror over here)

Instructions:

1. Install the Remote Play Software and Reboot.

2. Download and extract the NTAuthority Patch files.  You should have 4 files including the readme.  We will copy these files to this location, overwriting the files. Again this will vary depending on if your running 32bit or 64bit.

32-bit:  C:\Program Files\Sony\Remote Play with Playstation 3\
64-bit:  C:\Program Files(x86)\Sony\Remote Play with Playstation 3\

3. Next, open up the command prompt and be sure to run as an administrator (start menu > run > type: cmd and hit Enter or StartMenu Button + R, type: cmd and Enter)

This will vary depending on if your running Windows 7 32bit or 64bit.

32-Bit Users:

at command prompt, type: cd “%programfiles%\Sony\Remote Play with PlayStation 3″ -hit Enter

then type: regsvr32 vrpsdk.dll -hit Enter
you will get a popup message confirming registering of dll

now type: regsvr32 vrpmapping.dll -hit Enter

64-Bit Users:

at command prompt, type: cd “%programfiles(x86)%\Sony\Remote Play with PlayStation 3″ -hit Enter

then type: regsvr32 vrpsdk.dll -hit Enter
you will get a popup message confirming registering of dll

now type: regsvr32 vrpmapping.dll -hit Enter
again, you will get a popup message confirming registering of dll

(example of 64bit cmd actions)

4. Finally, we can now launch Remote Play and register our PC with our PS3 and start using it!

Go to your Start Menu > All Programs > Playstation Tools > Remote Play with Playstation 3.

If your using a desktop with a wired network connection, you will need an external wireless adapter connected to initially pair.  However once you have paired your PS3 and Desktop PC; you won’t need the adapter again.

5. Go through the setup wizard.  You will want to have your PS3 and PC on the same network for this initial pairing.  On your PS3, go to Settings > Remote Play > Register Device to start pairing.

6. Hopefully once your done with the wizard, you should be connected to your PS3!

Video Demo at youtube:

NOTES:

–Some are probably wondering, “What is Remote Play?Remote play lets you access your PS3′s XMB and certain content remotely. It was initially used w/PSPs but has been expanded to work with specific Sony Ericsson phones and Sony Vaio laptops. More detailed info can be found over at the official Playstation site.

–When exiting the Remote Play application on your PC, you can choose to Power Off the PS3 or Leave it in Remote Play mode.  You can also change settings on the PS3 to allow it to wake from Standby when Remote Play is started.  Remote play does use port 9293; you may need to forward this port on your router and open it up in your firewall.

I have followed all the steps, get the screen asking to name the device, which I do, then get screen to enter the Register Device Code from the PS3, and after I enter it and continue to next step the screen where it obviously tries to register freezes and then a popup comes up asking “debug program” or “close” cause its not responding. Has anyone else gotten this problem and got a fix for it? I have 32 bit windows 7

not at the moment, its very limited to what you can do and at this point is just for show more than anything.

no games are playable over remote play; only local ps3 videos, music, photos, friends, psn store are accessible. cool idea but not much use at moment.

Bit a slightly more complicated problem here. Followed the readme and checked these steps, all done to the letter. Works fine, except when I try to register it, I input the registration number from my PS3, and the instant it starts to register, W7 says it crashed. I’ve tried to run it as an admin, and also changed its priorities in the Task Manager. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Did you follow step 3 under the 64bit version where you replace the dll’s with the patched versions? You have to do that or else you won’t be able to run it because the program thinks its installed on a Sony Vaio computer… Hence the patch.

All works well, patching and all. during registration, its closes the program, with option to “SEND ERROR” or “CLOSE PROGRAM”. Other than all that, it works. If im not on same network, it works up to point of registration, and says it cant find the PS3 (obviously because its on different network). so its just a problem once it connects to the PS3 to register. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks for getting back to me. I really appreciate it. :)

Have managed to get the PSP up and running with remote play, but this PC thing is killing me!

It is a Toshiba A500 satellite laptop. I’m assuming if it can access the internet via my wireless router that it has an inbuilt wifi card yeah?

While experimenting and turning wifi off on my laptop, instead of it crashing when trying to register, it brings up another message saying “device registration failed” with a bunch of possible reasons for it.

Once you turn on the” register PC” on the PS3, a wireless connection appears in my available connections window. I’ve even tried having my laptop connected to this but it asks me for a security key. I found this online but that doesn’t help either.

          Any ideas?

It does seem like it is something to do with the home connection as the registration does not crash when i turn the wifi off on my laptop.

Hope i made some sort of sense.

Look forward to hearing from you,

          Regards

connected to wifi router via wired connection, ps3 connected via wifi
            windows 7 64bit
remote play installer was from sony’s site

i just uploaded it so it may take a few minutes to process.

thanks for the amazing effort you have gone to. I did everything you did but I’m having the same prob.

the only thing that is different for me is when i install remote play i dont get the directx update section. I used the link at the top of the page for the sony download. So i used one of the above links to update my directx “http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyId=2DA43D38-DB71-4C1B-BC6A-9B6652CD92A3&displaylang=en” and downloaded the file and it looked to update directx for me. having said that this version did not have the xna logo at the bottom and i also dont think it said software development kit either.

            Could this be the prob?

Don’t know why your install automatically checks directx for you and mine does not.

            regards

honestly not sure where to go after this :( may be some runtime

Thanks again for your input seamonkey.

Tried the above things and still no luck.

Have been on so many forums and there are more people having the same problem as me than there are people actually enjoying remote play on their PC.

It’s not a 32bit/64bit issue, it’s not a firewall issue or a brand issue, I just wish I knew more about computers.

What i find strange is that when the PC and PS3 are on the same network and an I attempt to register, it crashes almost immediately. Take them off of the same network and it doesn’t crash, but then obviously i cant register at all.

Something between the PC and PS3 is clashing somewhere, as it is for hundreds of other people.

One thing I have noticed when testing the connection on PS3, uPnP comes up as not available even though it is turnd on on my router. Am i supposed to have a port open maybe? If so do we know what number it is?

            Clutching at straws…………….

Word of advice here: this all is a waste of time. Why?

. Can’t play ANY games (PS3 or PS1, not sure about other Playstation store non PS1 games tho)
    . Can’t use Netflix
    . Video streaming sucks
. Haven’t tried audio streaming, but I’m guessing it sucks too
. Not 100% sure about this, but I think I read somewhere that you can’t play Blu Rays
. The only use I could possibly think of is (I read someone on another site mentioning this as a somewhat legit use) is hooking a PS Eye up and monitoring your home with it. Even this seems somewhat unnecessary, and like something that no one would use

I spent over an hour trying to get remote play to work on my laptop, like the stubborn sob i am. Waste of over an hour of my life if you ask me.

If your PS3 has CFW, you can just edit the SFO file, and just enable remote play on it. Just backup the games you want to play, then edit their SFO file to enable remote play. :)

I don’t think it matters whether or not there is a laptop involved. We’re using Windows 7 (and the people who aren’t are idiots because it says ‘Windows 7′ in the page title).
I have had this problem. I am using WIndows 7 Ultimate 64-bit (on PC if you STILL care). I’ve registered the dlls as instructed, and replaced the files as instructed, and I’m using a wireless dongle, and it still gives buttkiss.

Someone must have some clue as to why when you enter in the number given by the PS3 during registration it crashes. Enter in any other 8 digit number other than the reg. code and it does not crash but then gives a message that it can’t register.

I’m almost at the point where I want to reformat my comp to 32 bit just to see if that works. More people seem to be getting it to work on 32 bit. Having said that I have read a post where someone got it working using 64 bit.

I’m having the same problem many other people are having. I’m using Windows 7 (32-bit) and everytime it asks me for the 8 digit code and I press “Next” the program crashes.

Also, when my PS3 isn’t in Device Registration standby and I enter a random 8 digit number, the program doesn’t crash but it says “Device Registration Failed” like it should.
But when my PS3 IS is Device Registration standby and I enter a random 8 digit number, it crashes again.

So it doesn’t matter if the number is right or wrong, if the PS3 is in standby, the program crashes.
I hope someone finds a solution to this problem.

AHH!! i think i know what it is. my bad on this one. i believe you need to copy the patch files prior to running the regsvr32 commands. so basically steps 2 and step 3 should be swapped around. i am updating this article this weekend to correct that. sorry all about that.

i just re-did the setup on my 64bit desktop computer and it worked right away copying the dll and exe patch files first adn then registering the dlls via command line.

So unsure if they are on the same network, any help to pair these up would be much appreciated,,after looking it seems alot of people are having this same problem so it could possibly be the easy fix everyones looking for..

I tried the directions exactly, but I got the same problem. I clicked on debug and then noticed that faulting module is MSVCR80.dll. (Latest version of Direct X already installed)

I had no MSVCR80.dll anywhere in my PC, which is Win7x64 installed.

Then, I installed Visual Studio 2005, then I searched and found 11 msvcr80.dll files under winsxs folder. Their sizes are 612K, 617K, 778K, 783K, 803K.

I still get freeze after entering the registration number, and when I debug I still get the same MSVCR80.dll error message.

    @Jimmy , Dentok

After MSVCR80.dll issues in windows 7, I tried it on windows Vista ultimate 64bit SP2 with platform update on a Vmware with USER32.dll -> ASER32.dll workaround.

    It worked in first attempt.

May be windows 7 64 bit home edition is not compatible with this patch.
PS3 firmware version does not matter and I did not have to install anything extra in Vista. Vista and windows 7 already have .net framework 3.5 or higher and directx 10 or higher, out of box.

I searched everywhere on internet, nobody is able to crack this MSVCR80.dll issue in win 7 so far. May be a .Net developer or patch developer understand it better.

First it is easy you put the four files in the remote play playstatation 3 after the command line if it gives any errors make sure that you started the CMD as administrator, then gives error d3dx9_42.dll download here. Dll and resolve the problem after:http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?d3dx9_42
This done! enjoy playing at your PC’m from Brazil and my english is not it so these things blame google translate

In terms of your poor resolution problem the resolution is poor on a PSP and PS Vita using remote play and so I wouldn’t expect it to look good on a larger screen>

For anyone experiencing the 0×80070005 error, try the following:

    a) Click on the Start button
    b) In the Start Search box type ‘cmd’
    c) Right click on the search result and select ‘Run as Administrator’
    d) type: cd %programfiles(x86)%\Sony\Remote Play with PlayStation 3 (without exclamations)
    e) Try re-registering the dll file and check what happens.

    regsvr32 vrpsdk.dll -hit Enter
(you will get a popup message confirming registering of dll)

    regsvr32 vrpmapping.dll -hit Enter
(again, you will get a popup message confirming registering of dll)

This worked for me on a Windows 7 64-bit desktop PC without issue.

Is there a way to get this to work with Windows 8.1? I’ve tried, but when trying to register vrpsdk.dll it didn’t give me a confirmation message. I went and tried anyway, but it gave me a 0×000… error. I have no clue if it was an 8.1 problem or if I did something wrong. I used the Administrative version of command prompt, too.

I’ve followed the instructions to completion but whenever I click past the point where you enter the 8 digit code I get a popup telling me that it’s looking for a PS3 then it stops working and the program force closes. I’m on an HP laptop on 64bit Windows with a wireless connection. Any help would be great, thanks.
