XP/2000: Text Too Small on High DPI Notebook Screens and Monitors

By default, Windows XP and 2000 do not support high-DPI screens. The following Tech-Recipes tutorial describes how to change this.


New high-DPI screens and monitors have been released; however, XP and Windows 2000 do not support them well. To fix this, use the steps listed below to change your system’s DPI settings and edit the registry.

    1. Right-click on a blank area of the desktop.
    2. Select Properties
    3. Click the Settings tab.
    4. Select Advanced.
    5. Select the General tab.
    6. Select the appropriate DPI setting.
    7. Click OK.
    8. Reboot.
    9. Click Start,
    10. Click Run
    11. Type regedit in the text box, and click OK.
    12. Navigate to the following key:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main

    13. Click Edit menu.
    14. Select New.
    15. Select DWORD.
    16. Rename the new New Value #1 to UseHR.
    17. Double click, and change the value to 1
    18. Click OK.
    19. Reboot.
