Google Talk: Run Multiple Instances or Login as Multiple Users

If you have several google talk accounts, you may want to run multiple instances of google talk at once. Here’s how to do it.

Many users, including myself, like to have several different personalities on IM–Work, play, etc. By default google talk with only allow you to run instance of the program at a time. Here’s how to get around that…

Run google talk with the following switch: /nomutex

If you installed google talk to the default location, you can easily create a shortcut to this setting.

    1. Right-click on the desktop
    2. Select New
    3. Select Shortcut
    4. Paste this into the text box:
    "c:\program files\google\google talk\googletalk.exe" /nomutex

    5. Click Next6. Name it whatever: Google Talk Multiple, etc.
    7. Click OK until you are done.

Hats off to the neowin forum for the original idea:

I have followed the below steps
    1. created gtalk short icon on my desktop & then change the target as “”C:Program FilesGoogleGoogle Talkgoogletalk.exe” /startmenu
    2. created gtalk short icon on my desktop & then change the target as “C:Program FilesGoogleGoogle Talkgoogletalk.exe” nomutex.

The purpose is to have gtalks available to me for 2 dufferent id’s.

But after doing all this steps when I am trying to open galk both are pointing to single id. If I lot out from one galk its automatically logging me out from the another one.

Please suggest if I am missing something?

    hello Naganaresh
even i am facing the same issue. Have you got any fix for this? Please suggest.

  64. Nitesh said on April 7, 2011

YOu need to first create 2 shortcuts on the desktop.. Name one of the shortcut as “Second GTalk”,, Now on the second gtalk, open properties and just add (space)nomutex in the Target Text Box and press ok. It worked for me this way..
