iOS 4.2: Free Find My iPhone

Posted November 22, 2010 by David Kirk in Apple iPhone

With iOS 4.2 Apple has made the Find My iPhone service free for everybody. Here is how to access the free Find My iPhone service.

Find My iPhone is a service provided by Apple that allows you to locate your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch via GPS on google maps. It also allows you to lock your phone or make it alarm so it can be found more easily. You can even completely wipe a lost or stolen device. With iOS 4.2 Apple now provides this service for free.

1. First, update your device to iOS 4.2 if you have not done so already
2. Click the Settings icon
3. Select Mail, Contacts, Calendars
4. Select Add Account
5. Select MobileMe
6. Input your Apple ID username and password (or create one if needed)

After the validation process, you may access the Find My iPhone/iPad interface at me.com

Should have been an included utility for the 4 to begin with. The Mobile Me thing is, to me, a mess.

I think this will be Apple’s exploration into online web services. This is Apple’s first expansions into “the cloud”. Find My iPhone is a nice feature… I think we are all really holding our breath for a cloud-based iTunes.

Isn’t it useless if the theif wipes the phone?

You should point out that this free service is not for iPhones earlier than 4

Yeah, it’s really odd. To create a free account you must have an iPhone 4, but once you have created your account, you supposedly can use an iOS4 device.

“Make sure your iPhone is running iOS 4.2. If you’re creating a free account for the first time, you need an iPhone 4.”
