iTunes 10.0.1: How to Hide the Ping Dropdown Buttons

Posted September 28, 2010 by Rob Rogers in Music

If you don’t use the iTunes social network, Ping, then these dropdown buttons are both pointless and annoying. Disabling Ping doesn’t remove them but here’s how to get rid of them.

For OS X users:

1. Close iTunes.

2. Open Terminal and execute the following terminal command:
defaults write com.apple.iTunes hide-ping-dropdown -bool TRUE

3. If you want to restore the the arrow buttons of old, also execute the following terminal command:
defaults write com.apple.iTunes show-store-link-arrows 1

For Windows users:

1. Close iTunes.

2. Opan the Command Prompt and execute the following command:
"C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.exe" /setPrefInt hide-ping-dropdown 1

3. If you want to restore the the arrow buttons of old, also execute the following terminal command:
"C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.exe" /setPrefInt show-store-link-arrows 1

When you are done, your iTunes will go from this:

to this:

or, if you opted for showing the arrows, like this:

Is there some way you can hide the ping bar under the iTunes store list?
