Sony PSP Go / PSP: How to completely wipe device and memory card and remove PSN ID

This tech-recipe is for PSP and PSP Go owners who are looking to completely wipe / delete all media, saved games, games, and personal information on your PSP prior to selling or gifting. This includes removing your PSN account login info, deactivating your PSP from your PSN account and the actual formatting of the storage memory and any M2 memory cards you may have too.

Deactivating your PSP:

1. On your PSP / PSP Go, go to XMB > Playstation Network > Account Management, it will need to connect to the internet and the PSN. Then go to System Activation. We will need to deactivate the PSP from both Games and Video/Comics.  Go into each, choose to Deactivate.

This will remove the link from this PSP and your PSN account and freeing up the activation license. You are limited to I believe 5 systems (combination of ps3,psp devices) per PSN account.

Formatting the System Storage and Memory Cards:

1. Go to the XMB > Settings > System Settings

Then go to the Format System Storage option.  It will prompt you twice, choose Yes and once it completes your PSP Go’s builtin storage has been formatted / erased.

Next, if you have any M2 memory cards you want to format / erase, put them in and go to the Format Memory Stick option.  Choose Yes to the prompts and once completed your memory card will be erased.

Restoring Default Settings / Removing PSN Login

1. Go to the XMB > Settings > System Settings > Restore Default Settings

It will give you a list of items that will be deleted (settings, psn id info, etc) and restored to factory / out of box settings.

Hit X to continue and a Yes to the prompt.  Finally, you will be prompted to restart your PSP by hitting X.

Once your PSP reboots, it will be at the initial first time setup screens and in turn have all of your information / games / data removed from the PSP Go.

NOTES:
-You can’t sell your digital purchased games.  They are associated w/your PSN ID and in turn cannot be traded or moved to another account; another downfall of digital only distribution. Be wary when buying a PSP Go that comes w/games since they will most likely not work unless they are actual psn vouchers that haven’t been used.
