XP: Disable Reminder Balloon to Create Passport Account

After a new installation of XP, Microsoft will continuously remind you to create a Passport account. This tech-recipe contains the reg hack to stop the reminders.


If you do not plan to use Microsoft Passport, you do not have to be reminded continuously to create an account for it.

Here is the reg hack to stop the reminders.

If you are not familiar with “editing the registry,” back up your system before you proceed. If you damage the registry, you damage your system.

    1. Click Start.
    2. Click Run.
    3. Type regedit in the text box, and click OK.
    4. Browse to this registry key:
    HKEY LOCAL MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MessengerService

    5. Click the Edit menu.
    6. Click New.
    7. Select Binary Value.
    8. Rename this new value PassportBalloon
    9. Double-click this value, and change the value data to 0a in hex
    10. Exit regedit.
    11. Reboot.
