Turn off System Restore When Cleaning Spyware that Keeps Coming Back

Posted October 8, 2004 by nullvariable in Windows spyware

I have found that many spyware programs will hijack the Windows System Restore feature even if you have a good spyware removal program. (My favorite is SpySweeper.) This Tech-Recipes tutorial explains how to turn off System Restore which many spyware programs use to keep returning even if you have deleted them.

Use the following steps to turn off System Restore:

  1. Go to your Desktop.

  2. Select My Computer.
  3. Right-click, and choose Properties.
  4. Select the tab System Restore.
  5. Select the option Turn off System Restore on all drives.
  6. Press OK.
  7. Run your spyware removal tool.
  8. Reboot.

System Restore should be turned off now.
