AOL representative reports on the best way to cancel the aol account of a dead family member.

I noticed this information in the Aug. 3, 2004 dead-tree version of pc magazine.

A former AOL technical support guy reported that the easiest way to cancel the AOL account for a dead family member.

Send a letter of cancellation which should include:

    1. Master screen name of the account
    2. Name and address listed for the account
    3. Billing contact’s name
    4. Method of payment previously used
    5. “Last four digits of that method”
I am assuming the last four digits of the credit card used for the account.

Fax this letter with a certified copy of the death certificate to 904-232-4800.

Now, I wonder if this technique could be used to cancel any AOL account. With all the people now creating and cancelling accounts to get free ipods and free TVs, this might be an easy way to cancel without any phone calls. The death certificate is probably not needed if you are writing the letter yourself.

Maybe somebody could try this and post their experience.
