AOL representative reports on the best way to cancel the aol account of a dead family member.

I noticed this information in the Aug. 3, 2004 dead-tree version of pc magazine.

A former AOL technical support guy reported that the easiest way to cancel the AOL account for a dead family member.

Send a letter of cancellation which should include:

    1. Master screen name of the account
    2. Name and address listed for the account
    3. Billing contact’s name
    4. Method of payment previously used
    5. “Last four digits of that method”
I am assuming the last four digits of the credit card used for the account.

Fax this letter with a certified copy of the death certificate to 904-232-4800.

Now, I wonder if this technique could be used to cancel any AOL account. With all the people now creating and cancelling accounts to get free ipods and free TVs, this might be an easy way to cancel without any phone calls. The death certificate is probably not needed if you are writing the letter yourself.

Maybe somebody could try this and post their experience.

I had signed up for free trial period with AOL.within a fortnights time i started calling in for cancellation.but no vail.

They have already charged me for two months in row.
I'm in canada since last three months and kept calling in for cancellation and they wouldn't cancell the account or give me any info as the Name of account holder has een hacked/changed.

Though they confirmed that account utility for the signed up period is no more than 20 Hours..
    - Your full name
    - Master Screen Name
    - Phone Number
    - Complete Address and zip code as listed on the AOL Account
    - Last four numbers of your current payment method (for your security
    only the last four digits)
    - Handwritten Signature

I have been advized by AOL Billing to complete the info as mentioned in the above 5 points.

Now I'm back again on catch 22.

Credit card guys would not reverce the charges and AOL wouldn't cancel account.

I'm already POPER by 50 Bucks.

AOL needs to hire more people that can speak clear english and that can understand you when you are talking to them.. AOL can not help with anything that you ask for, and all they do is run you around in circles.

the ones you're talking to are probably people that have been outsourced from another country...cheaper cost.

my english is by no means perfect (scouser) so between my accent and the "but but vhat are you vanting" there is a lack of understanding wich is why I cancelled. Outsourcing call centers for short term gain will come back and bite these companys in the arse 8O

I've lost count of the amount of people in RL that i've steered well clear of AOL, there service is bad, the software a nightmare come true, you have to format your computer to fully uninstall it ! i swear it way easier that way and now i hear that cancelling your account is near impossible.
