This is a recipe for a true geek with a sidekick.

Ok. I run my own shoutcast server so i can listen to my music from anywhere. But i didn’t want to setup a webpage to control my winamp/shoutcast server due to security and i would prob need to learn some php. This recipe explains how to use your sidekick as a remote to control winamp/shoutcast server remotely; not a real guide but more of conceptual outline.

How to use your sidekick to admin your shoutcast server.

This recipe is more of a hotdish so to say.

First things are first.
We will need these prerequisites:

1. You own a sidekick/hiptop
2. You are/have the developers kit and dev key
3. You have a shoutcast server running and use winamp

I’m a music junkie and want it anywhere, thus why i setup my own shoutcast server, streamed mp3s on any computer with wnamp or media player.

However, i was limited to setting up the playlist the previous nite in the order i wanted. I had tried using a few plugins for winamp that had web pages to control winamp but didn’t like it too well and was worried about security issues since i’m not a great web admin.

Steps:
1. Install Remote Winamp for the Sidekick, go to http://skdr.net and download it. You will need to register but if your into sidekick dev and apps, its a good thing.
2. Upload the bundle to your sidekick using HTConsole and make sure to save it (loader save at htconsole command line)
3. Download the remote plugin for winamp from here: http://jurai.free.fr/skapp/gen_rsvr.zip. and install it.
4. Open up winamp, go to the Preferences > Plugins > General Purpose > Remote Control Server and click the Start with Winamp and also setup the port to what you want (change it from the default value for security reasons, and also be sure to forward this port if you have a firewall setup) and also change the Updatetime to 250ms. Then click OK.

5. On your sidekick, go into the Remote Winamp program, create a new pc with your pc’s IP address and the port you setup in the winamp remote control server plugin. and boom, remote control of your winamp at your finger tips anywhere!

NOTES/TIPS:
I run a webserver from my pc so i have a shoutcast server and my own site running. To make things easier for ya, you can download a plugin for winamp that will create an html file of the playlist and then publish it on your webserver so you can easily jump to songs with Remote Winamp’s goto option. Then you can view this page on your sidekick if you want and then jump back and forth between the sidekick’s browser and remote winamp programs to change songs and so on.

peace
