XP: Completely Turn Off or Adjust AutoPlay / AutoRun

If you find autoplay annoying, this recipe descibes how to adjust it.


Some people love autoplay, others hate it. Here is how to adjust it or turn it off.

    1. Navigate to My Computer
    2. Right-click on the floppy, CD, or DVD drive you want to adjust
    3. Select Properties from the context menu that appears
    4. Select the AutoPlay tab
    5. You can select what you want windows to do when a disc is inserted based on the content that is detected on the disc.

    This recipe does NOT affect autorun, it only affects XP's reaction to autorun-free discs that have readable content. If the CD contains an AUTORUN.INF file, it will be obeyed regardless of what you set any of these settings to.

    To disable autorun properly, grab TweakUI for XP from Microsoft's site.
