Displaying the welcome screen after the screensaver is occasionally useful. This describes turning it on or off.

Screensaver turns on, you move the mouse, and you are sitting at the welcome screen. You’ve got an extra click to get into your workspace.

I am sure there are people out there that find this a vital part of XP. I have found that most people that have this feature on, hate it… and just do not know how to disable it.

Well, here you go.

    1. Right-click on a blank area on the desk top
    2. Select properties from the context menu that opens
    3. Left-click the screensaver tab
    4. Unclick the checkbox that says On resume, display Welcome Screen to disable. ( or click the checkbox to enable it.)
    5. Click OK

Returning to the login screen seems only to be useful when a system is password protected. If a system uses user ids with passwords, then it is likely appropriate for the system to request reauthentication following a period of inactivity.

However, if all one is forced to do is click on a pretty picture next to a name, I agree that it is a nuisance. I'm glad there is a means to disable this. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Note: the "Display Welcome Screen on Resume" is only available when there are more than one user account. (besides the Administrator or guest accounts) If you only have one account you'll get the classic Win2k logon window, not the welcome screen.

Thanks a lot for this hint, I hate it when the welcome screen comes in uninvited.
