Using the code in this recipe, you can make the advance button on your TiVo remote your most favorite button on any remote. Once enabled, pressing this button will cause your TiVo to jump forward 30 seconds, the typical length of a commercial. Also, when viewing in fast forward or reverse, this button will cause the playback to skip to the next tick mark.

You should enter the 30 second skip code while viewing a pre-recorded program (if you enter the code elsewhere, the keypresses may do things you don’t want). You do not need to be in backdoor mode for this code to work.

While watching a recording, press:

Unfortunately, this does not work on a Toshiba SD-H400 (DVD/Tivo). I wish there was such a hack on the unit, as it is the only thing I don't like about it.

Does not work on the Hughs unit either.

It works fine on a Hughes HDVR2. Just do it when watching a recorded program

works fine on HDVR2, but you have to be watching something from the playlist and you have to aim the remote at the tivo when you enter the codes. If it is correct you get 3 beeps and a select button sound. Very cool.

This is an awesome option. Got DirecTV w/TIVO last spring & one of the things I was bummed about was no 30 sec. skip option. I was used to that from Dish. Still went ahead w/purchase but went right home and searched the internet for a 30 sec. cheat. Needless to say, I found it and it's wonderful. I have a RCA DirectTV w/TIVO integrated. Just make sure you have something you've recorded playing before setting it up. It won't work if you try to do it while watching live TV.

Anybody gotten this to work for the Toshiba SD-H400 (DVD/Tivo), the unit responds with three quick beeps indicating success but the function of the >>| button does not change.

Anyone gotten this to work on the second generation Phillips unit? I used it all the time on my old Phillips TiVo, but once it gave up the ghost and I replaced it, the new one won't take the code.

I just got a brand new DSR-704 R/17 and the code worked on it

Our 30 second skip stopped working. Has anyone else had this problem?
  • I had the same problem but I managed to fix it.

I heard the hack only lasts until you reset or reboot the unit. Enter the hack again and it will work

It has stopped working for me too. It has worked in the past, but it stopped working after the latest servie update.

Try it again after your software upgraded.

The upgrade has enabled the hack.

This also works on the logitech harmony remotes too. Thanks!

I have two Humax tivo dvrs working from one remote. The 30-sec skip feature does not work on either machine. Am I doing something wrong?

I recently purchased a TiVo HD XL recorder (Model TCD658000) and cannot, for the life of me, program it to have the 30 second skip. I have followed instructions very carefully, including doing the programming while viewing a previously recorded program but I do not hear the 3 bongs eveyone references after performing the required steps in the programming process. When I press the advance button after programming, I am sent to the end of the recording. Did they change the software for this model? Any suggestions? Any help would be appreciated since the 30 second skip was one of the features that convinced me to buy a TiVo.

I have a new unit too (Tivo HD), and at first thought that this mod didn't work. I would enter the code sequence, but didn't hear the 3 bongs indicating it had succeeded.

Then I remembered a similar experience with entering a code on an entirely different remote, and recalled needing to wait about a second in between pressing each button. When I repeated the steps on the Tivo remote, pausing ~1 second between each button, I heard the 3 bongs.

So it really does work with the latest units and remotes - just have patience with the timing of the button presses when entering the code, until you hear the 3 bongs.

Thanks, Tivo hd xl remote does need a slow sequence. It worked fine, although I never heard the three bongs.

I too recently purchased a TiVo HD XL and have not been able to program the 30 second skip. This is my 5th TiVo so I know the routine. I tried to enter it slowly also.

I finally figured how to program the new TiVo HD XL.. Don't use the remote
that comes with the new unit to program the 30 second skip. Use a remote
that comes from an older version TiVo. Once the HD XL is programmed using
the old remote you can then use the new one to do the 30 second skip. Go
    figure....
