I was putting up with 1.5 sec for preview pane refresh for at least 3 months. I finally decided to do soemthing about it and this solution worked immediately!

BTW, I have Outlook 2002 (10.4219.4219) SP-2.

I was having the same problem until I disabled IM from automatically signing in. I would have never guessed it either.

I would’ve never guessed it was Messenger slowing up the outlook preview. Thanks for the fix.
