Facebook: Import Blogs or RSS Feeds without Third Party Applications

Most applications to add blogs or rss feeds to facebook are bulky or buggy. Facebook itself has the ability to import these articles, display them on your profile, and notify your friends when these have been updated. Although the feature is not obvious, this tutorial should make it easy. Screencast showing this process in action is included.

I have tried several third party applications for adding my personal blog to facebook. Most of them either worked poorly and were filled with bugs. I just realized that facebook itself has this feature. It is just hidden.

A high resolution youtube screencast of this tutorial is available. An even higher resolution iTunes friendly podcast version is available as well.

1. Log into facebook
2. Under Applications select more and then select Notes
3. In the right column, under “Note Settings” select Import a Blog. If that is not present, then select Edit import settings
4. Enter the web url to your blog (or whatever other RSS enabled page your want to import) and click the Start Importing button
5. Preview the import and if you like it, click the Confirm Import button
6. Your blog posts will now appear on your mini-feed. Your friends will be updated when a new blog post is available.

If you want your blog posts to appear on your profile, do the following.

Scroll to the bottom of your profile and click the Edit Extended Profile link. Unselect “Notes” and click the Move Boxes button. The Notes box will appear on your profile. Click and drag it into whatever position you like.

Here’s my youtube screencast describing this process…

I was wondering how to make Facebook import my posts and I found your advice very helpful. Thanks for taking the trouble to write it up so clearly.

    David,

Your instructions were most helpful. I figured out a way to import an RSS feed. However, Facebook’s instructions indicate they initiate the import every two hours. I did a post to an RSS feed page just before 10AM and it is now after 3PM.

Do you have any experience with using RSS feeds?
