Ubuntu: Disable the Startup Sound

Even though the startup sound for Ubuntu is short and pleasant, it can become annoying. I got tired of hearing it each time I logged into my system so it had to go. Here’s how to quiet it down:

1. Click System, mouseover Preference, and select Sound.

2. When the Sound Preferences window appears, select the Sounds tab.

3. Go to the bottom and click the Log in dropdown.

4. Scroll down and select No sound.

5. Click the Close button.

These instructions are no longer valid for 9.10.

    Hi,
As Chris commented, these instructions are not longer valid. Any new suggestions? I turned all sounds under preferences, but the sound is still there!
    Quite annoying

I solved this by going to System > Preferences > Startup Applications and editing “GNOME login sound” to read:

    /usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play # –id=”desktop-login” –description=”GNOME Login”

In effect commenting out the sound to be played in case I wanted to restore the default settings at a later time.

    For Ubuntu 9.1
System -> Preferences -> Startup Applications
    From Startup Programs tab
Scroll down to GNOME Login Sound
    Remove the check

Under sound preferences I’ve selected the “no sounds” theme.
Under System>Preferences>Startup Applications I deselected login or startup sound.
Didn’t work. Under System>Preferences>Startup Applications I “removed” login or startup sound. I still get the startup sound

This is trivial but worked for me:

    Open terminal
    cd /usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo
    sudo mv system-ready.ogg system-ready.ogg.disabled

    OR

Annoying? Really? Let’s talk about the “windows” logon and logoff…

No, let’s not. At least not here. That has nothing to do with this thread.

Yes, we all know Windows is annoying, and that the earth is round, etc, etc. But instead of diverting into something useless and unrelated like that, let’s try to stay on topic.

    In Ubuntu 10.10:

    Name: GNOME Login Sound
    Command: /usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play –id=”desktop-login” –description=”GNOME Login”
Comment: Plays a sound whenever you log in
