Facebook: Delete or Remove Friend
Everybody loves friends on Facebook… until they get annoying or start spamming. Here is how to delete or remove a Facebook friend. Updated for latest Facebook version.
Oh, Facebook… my Facebook. Like most social sites, it is fun to get a huge circle of friends. However, in order to reduce the noise to signal ratio, it is often nice to narrow your friends list.
Sometimes, a friend is just no longer a friend. Here is how to dump them…
New Version:
Several methods exist for removing friends in the latest version of Facebook. If you are on a friend’s profile page, then the unfriend link is at the very bottom of the left sidebar:
If you are looking to unfriend several people at once, it probably best to unfriend through your friends list.
1. Click the Friends link in the left sidebar.
2. Click the Edit Friends button
3. Find the friend you wish to remove, and click the X beside his or her name. Then you will be asked to confirm the deletion.
This is very similar to removing friends in the previous version of Facebook. Those directions are included here for historical purposes:
On Facebook, pull up your friends list.
Click the Remove Friend link
A pop-up pseudo window will open. Confirm that you really want to remove the friend.

What about removing a whole list of people? Is there an option for that? I have “friends” that were added to fill slots in games. I have read they can be removed from my fb wall and I can still play…but deleting 500 ppl one at a time is a royal pain. Help!

If you delete a friend, can they request to be your friend later and you can accept them again? Or are they “deleted” forever?
Anonymous said on February 9, 2010
they can request it, you ignore it. YOU can also ask them to be a friuend too
Anonymous said on February 14, 2010
This is bullshit.
There’s NO tab for remove friend.
Why don’t these clowns have the brains to post directions for this?
This has got to be the most needed application.
simon dust said on February 15, 2010
it’s changed since they changed the layout – I did it by going to the page of the friend i wanted to delete then clicking remove as friend from the link bottom-left.

I stumbled across an easy way to delete friends quickly on Facebook.
Paste this link into your browser;
http://www.facebook.com/friends/?filter=afp
This will display your friends in a list format. Then simply click on the ‘X’ to the right of their name and a box will pop up to confirm if you want to delete the connection with that friend. I deleted over 200 people in 3-5 minutes.
Hope this helps some of you out

Dan Theman12 said on July 6, 2010
No, it does not announce to anyone that you removed them. Obviously your friend will eventually figure out that you removed them unless they hardly ever contact you, then they prob won’t notice until the day they want to contact you.

remember that you can hide people from the newsfeed too. When I was ill, I spent all day on FB. A couple of people removed me (must have been annoying) but I it kind of hurt a little (e.g. to be the only person in the M.Phil year group dumped etc). I have some really annoying friends but I keep them and hide them, rather than hurt their feelings.
Sorry to be all sensitive about this- YES there are people who need removing. I have done this many times too

I have a whole slew of maybe friends. How can I delete these and stop them from reappearing. I don’t know to much about Facebook but it’s not for me. Thanks
Robin Gross said on February 2, 2011
Yeah, I have the same problem as Janetjpearson. How do you get rid of “People You May Know” that you really don’t? Each one used to have an “x” next to them that you could select and they’d disappear from your “Maybe” list. Now the “x” isn’t there anymore. This is a real pain…

If I just delete a person, he can use my first invitation to him to be my friend again? This happend to me. I deleted a person and he just appeared today as my friend again. I received a email like this “he accepted your invitation”, but I did not sent him the invitation again. Please help!!!
Jim said on March 12, 2011
Many of the names that fb suggests (“People you may know”), are not people I want to ask to be friends. Fb’s suggestions are based on some people I friended a while back, and these people skew the new names that are suggested to me.
Short of “unfriending” some of them, I wonder what to do?
Also, it used to be when someone was suggested, you could just “X” so they wouldn’t be suggested any more. Since that feature’s been removed, now, I keep seeing a lot of the people repeating each time I review the suggestions.

ALL of the people suggested as friends by fb are not my idea. Would fb please check my age (75) before suggesting teen-age friends of my grandchildren. Even right-clicking doesn’t show the delete option. Judging by the number of complaints on this subject would fb PLEASE pack it in.
Ian said on July 15, 2011
Ah but ah but. Does this mean I have “invite” the several hundred possibles that fb have lumbered on me and then “X” them – ONE BY ONE! GRRRRRRRR!
