The original post does not work… but as the OP suggested in the comments section.. you can click into the accounts section of your prefs, click the tab labeled “mailbox behaviors”, and go through each account (if more than 1) and ensure the “show notes in inbox” check box is unchecked. (just a bit more info than the comments / suggestions)

I found that the solution in the original post no longer works, but that the solution posted by Phil as a comment works fine. Very happy as that was suddenly very annoying!

In Mail 4.1 (and perhaps in Mail 4.0) just uncheck the “Show notes in Inbox” for each email account in the Mail Preferences pane.
