Leopard Terminal: TABS!

Terminal junkies rejoice! Tabs are here, tabs are here! Like with the new iChat, OS X 10.5 finally allows terminal windows to be stacked in tabs. Taming all the multiple ongoing terminal sessions as never been easier…

Many people had stopped using the default terminal program in tiger because of the lack of tabs. Leopard’s terminal has all the features of tabs that you would expect.

To open a New tab in Terminal, you can hit cmd+T or load it from the Shell menu as pictured below. One of the advantages of loading it from the menu is that you can select different themes/styles for each new terminal window as well.

Control of the tabs can directed through the Window and Shell menus. Users familiar with Safari’s tab shortcuts will be at home here as well.

Select next (right) tab CMD+}
Select previous (left) tab CMD+{
Close tab CMD+W

Saving your tabs is very easy as well. In the Windows menu, Save Windows as Group will save your current tabs as well.

    More importantly, how do I make the tabs go away? They clutter up the display. If I’d wanted multiple sessions in the one terminal, I’d have used ‘screen’.
