One question. Do I put chain0 in the root of the C drive of Vista or XP? I’m a little confused.

Use ubuntu live cd and change the boot flag, this sets which partition to boot from and look for which bottloader. It can also cause the missing operating system or error loading operating system erros, just boot intop ubuntu, goto gparted and right click your vista partition and click manage flags and click boot and click apply or ok. Check all of your discs that are not HFS+ or mac formatted and edit the boot.ini in your vista partition if you have xp to point to the corrrect partition if it wont boot.
