LinkedIn: How to Update Your Status Using SMS

If your cell phone doesn’t have a data plan, you can still update your LinkedIn status using SMS. For some people, this is an even quicker option for updating their status than using the mobile apps on iPhone and Android.

1. Go to LinkedIn and login to your account.

2. Go to the LinkedIn Lab, TextIn at http://textin.linkedinlabs.com/.

3. Input your cell phone number and click the GO button.

4. You will be prompted to grant access to your LinkedIn profile, click the Ok, I’ll Allow It button.

5. Once completed, you will be given a phone number to text your updates to. Copy the phone number and add it to your phone’s contact list for quick access.

6. To update your status, simply send an SMS message to the newly created contact. The SMS message needs to start with #update followed by your update. For example:
#update I will be in meetings all day.

would update your LinkedIn status to I will be in meetings all day.

There are other things you can do with your cell phone now that you’ve hooked it up to your LinkedIn account. By using #profile followed by a member’s email address, you can get profile information on them via SMS. You can also use #invite and a person’s email address to send them an invite to LinkedIn and #search followed by keywords or name to search, all via SMS.
