Matt Cutts of Google Discussing SEO: Session 7
Matt discusses if google analytics play a role in SERPs, how google detects duplicate content, how to get a page labelled as porn, and the acceptance of putting links in an option box.
My notes are included below…
Does google analytics play a role in search engine result pages (SERPs)? Does google use this data for ranking, etc.
No. Google just wants users to be able to enjoy it and isn’t currently using that data for much.
When does google detect duplicate content?
Google does a lot of duplicate detection. This detection occurs through different steps from the crawl through the indexing. Google detects absolute duplicates and near duplicates as well.
If you are having problems from duplicates, make sure that your pages are *quite* different from each other.
How should a webmaster make sure that a page gets labeled as porn in SafeSearch? Will there be a meta tag, for example?
There is no tag that says “I am porn, please exclude me from safesearch.”
SafeSearch looks at all the content of the page including comments and meta-tags. So including words there, will increase the changes of google labeling something as porn.
My note… Interesting that safesearch looks at metatags and comments when most other aspects of the spider does not. A few choice words left accidentally in the comments might explain why occasionally a user will accidentally find himself blocked by google’s safesearch filter.
Can the webmaster put links in an option box and expect google to spider from those links?
You can, but Matt does not recommend this. He is worried that this might “raise eyebrows” as nonstandard behavior. Placing these links on another page or at the bottom of a page would be better practice.
