Matt Cutts of Google Discussing SEO: Session 2
Matt discusses having multiple web sites on one server or ip address, using javascript on multiple domains, the dangers of rolling out massive sites quickly, and progress on google image search.
Feel free to reference the original video from which I took these notes.
Does google punish users that have multiple websites on one server, one ip address, or similar related ip address?
The routine webmaster with 2 to 5 websites on one server or IP address should not have to worry about this. Having huge number of sites (2000 was Matt’s example) on the same server or related ip addresses, however, is frowned upon.
Does it hurt sites to include the same javascript that references or originates from a different site?
As adsense uses javascript, for example, it does not typically matter. Using javascript for “sneaky redirects” will result in badness.
When rolling out a massively big new site, why does the site not do well despite having a ton of content and incoming links from the initial roll out?
Matt responds that a site with a million pages of content should probably not be rolled out all at once. Sites that big should be rolled out “a little more softly” by bringing out a few thousand pages at a time. Larger, massive roll-outs may trigger unwanted circumstances.
What’s the status of google images and can a update to the indexing technology be expected in the future?
The google image index has been recently updated. Constant improvements in the imaging indexing technology are being developed.
