IE7: Move the Menu back to the Top of Internet Explorer

Posted May 6, 2006 by MickeyMouse in Internet Explorer IE7

Since using the IE7, I have been unable to get used to the menu bar being between the tabs and navigation bar. This will move the menu back where it used to be.

The one thing I love about Microsoft is that stuff typically stays in the same place–even across versions. However, IE7 is moving toolbars and the Menu around. This is likely because it is built with the Vista design in mind; however, for now it’s driving me crazy.

Update:

ie7_menu_bar

The registry hack is probably not necessary now. Just right-click on a blank area of the tool bar and select Menu Bar. The old menu bar should appear. If not, you’ll have to fallback to this old hack…

Please note that this was developed with IE7 beta. The final version may be different.

Here is the registry hack to move the Menu back to the top in IE7:

    1. Click Start, Run, and then enter regedit into the runbox
    2. Press ENTER or click OK
    3. Browse to the following key:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\WebBrowser

    4. Click the Edit menu in regedit
    5. Select New and then DWORD value
    6. The name should be highlighted in the right column. Just type over this to name it:
    ITBar7Position
    7. Double click your new entry in the right column.
    8. Change the value to 1.
    9. Close regedit and open IE7 to see the change.

For those registry gurus… here’s the process in one swoop:
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\WebBrowser]
    "ITBar7Position"=dword:00000001

Remember, if you are not comfortable editing the registry, backup your system first. The registry can be a dangerous place to play.
