MSN, Yahoo, AIM: Fix Delay and Freeze When Sending IMs with Any Messenger

Posted December 12, 2005 by MickeyMouse in Instant messaging

At times, when you send a message with any IM service, you could experience a several second delay. In such cases, your system may even seem to freeze. Here is the fix.

When you experience delays with your IM service, such problems are usually caused by issues with your layered service provider (LSP). Spyware attacks and subsequent fixes often cause damage and corruption in your LSP.

A delay in your LSP will cause delays in all of your Internet connections. However, quick connections like IMs are usually noticed first. To fix the problem, you simply need to fix your LSP.

If you have SP2, you can easily fix this yourself with SP2’s new winsock netsh commands.

To reset LSP with XP SP2, use the following steps:

    1. Click Start.
    2. Click Run.
    3. Type in netsh winsock reset catalog.
    4. Hit ENTER, or click OK
