Microsoft OneCare: How to Install, Turn Off, and Disable

Microsoft’s OneCare is a new free security suite. It includes antivirus, firewall, PC maintenance, file backup, and restore abilities. However, once it is installed, it is difficult to control. Here is how to tame the beast.

    Microsoft’s OneCare is a new system that integrates a new protection and performance system into your installation. It works well; however, once it is installed, you can not completely turn it off without uninstalling it. I’ll give you some hints for taming it.

    Install:

Turn off the Real Time Antivirus:

    1. Double-click on the OneCare Icon in the system tray
    2. Click View or change settings under Other Tasks in the left column
    3. Select the Antivirus tab
    4. Select the appropriate radio button.

Remove the OneCare Icon from the System Tray:

    The icon cannot be removed without uninstalling the program. You can hide it through the routine methods. The purpose of the program is to notify you regarding the health of your system. If you don’t like the space and overhead it requires, it is better to just uninstall it.

    OneCare Live is not free. Once it comes out of beta you will need to buy a subscription.
  • You can easily disable and re enable Onecare. from the command prompt. You may have to log in as an administrator. Press WINDOWS-R and at the command prompt enter

    net stop winss

    or

    net start winss

    Helpful when the program doesn't start correctly.
