Windows XP: Enable/Disable Desktop Icon Grid

Posted November 20, 2005 by gouthro in Windows

By turning off the “Align to Grid” option, you can place your icons on your desktop in any manner you wish. Using this tutorial, you can customize the layout of your desktop.

If you want to get rid of the grid that forces your icons to be equally spaced, this is how.

    1. Right-click on your desktop.

    2. At the top (or near it), you will see Arrange Icons By. Select it.

    3. There will be one option called Align to Grid, with or without a check mark next to it.

    4. If there is a check mark next to it, you will disable the feature. If there is not one, you will enable it.
