No reason to buy expensive DVD playing software.  Packages are available for free.

I was sad to see a buddy of mine paying a ton of money for DVD software for his system.  Several free packages exist.

Video Lan is an amazing piece of software IMHO. It’ll play DVDs (and almost every other media file) without problems. Over 12 OS supported.

Equally impressive is MPlayer. It plays DVDs and most other media files without issues. Multiple translations available.

Zoom and BSPlayer are both free players that have pro versions that you can purchase. I have used them and they work well.

It is a codec thing. If you install a codec pack like the Vista Codec Package (http://www.free-codecs.com/download/vista_codec_package.htm) or K-lite (http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_lite_codec_pack.htm) it should work.
