A listing of a few known hyperlink commands for driving AIM.

Users can use hyperlinks to drive several features of AIM. I frequently will uses these codes to create shortcuts on my desktop which open aim in the manner I wish. Likewise, if you want users to be able to directly you to their buddy list from your web page or email, these codes are very handy.

If you are going to use them in shortcuts on your system, use them as directly listed below. If you are going to use them on a web page, use them in standard hyperlink format. I show examples below.

Opens a new IM window
aim:goim

Opens a new IM window with a screen name
aim:goim?screenname=SCREENNAME


    Here's an example to chat with an AOL bot named AOLBuddy:
    Chat with AOLBuddy

    HTML of the above example:
    <a href=aim:goIM?screenname=AOLBuddy>Chat with AOLBuddy</a>




Open new IM window with a screen name and a message
aim:goim?screenname=SCREENNAME&message=MESSAGE

    Here's an example that opens with the WallStreetJournal Bot (WSJ) and sends it a help message. This is nice for displaying the menu of the bot with fewer keystrokes:
    Send "Help" to WSJ Bot

    HTML code of above example:

    (If anybody knows how to send the carriage return too please let me know.)



Grabs shared files from a screen name
aim:getfile?screenname=SCREENNAME

Opens a chat room
aim:gochat?roomname=CHATROOMNAME

Automatically adds screen name to the "Add Buddy" window
aim:addbuddy?screenname=SCREENNAME

Automatically adds screen name and group name to the "Add Buddy" window
aim:addbuddy?screenname=SCREENNAME&groupname=GROUPNAME
