We live in a world of patents. Everybody tries to patent everything.
Now google is in the act. When a product says protected by patent number xxxxxxx, you now can go easily search to see exactly what the patent covers.
In google just search for patent and then the patent number. For example, here's a patent for an universal remote control system. (It'll be the first link.)
