OS X Leopard / VMWare : Turn on and off opening of files in virtual machines (ie .doc in office for windows)

contributed by Jimmy Selix on April 1, 2009 under Mac OS X Leopard

This recipe will explain how to enable / prevent VMWare Fusion from opening documents when in the Mac OS / Finder (ie not running in a virtual session).  For example, I have Windows XP running in VMWare Fusion and in turn installed Office 2007 and also shared my User folder in XP.  After doing this, I noticed that when i tried to open a .doc or .txt; VMWare Fusion would start my XP Machine and open it in Word 2007 (cool at first but annoying since i had iWork installed and preferred using Pages). For others though this might be nice integration. Here’s how to enable/disable this feature.

If your Mac is always on, you can have iCal send an email reminder to your cellphone for those extra important events. This is great for those with a busy schedule.

Leopard: Show Item Info in Finder’s Icon View

contributed by Rob Rogers on January 25, 2009 under Mac OS X Leopard

By default, Finder’s icon view simply shows you the name of the directory or file. By enabling Show Item Info, you can get additional information like the number of items in a directory, the dimensions of an image, or the length of a music or video file. This can be done for all files and directories on your Mac, or you can enable it individually on select folders.

Leopard Preview: Open All Images in One Window

contributed by Rob Rogers on January 23, 2009 under Mac OS X Leopard

By default, Leopard’s Preview opens groups of images in one window, however, individually selected images are opened up in their own windows. If you prefer to work from a single window, configure Preview to open all images in one window, regardless of how they are selected.

Leopard: Use Preview to Batch Resize Your Photos

contributed by Rob Rogers on January 22, 2009 under Mac OS X Leopard

You want to email some photos to your friends and family but need to resize them first. Instead of resizing each photo, one at a time, you can resize them in a single batch and have them done in nothing flat.

Leopard: Recovering from a Dock Disaster (Like dragging a large number of files to the dock instead of a folder)

contributed by Rob Rogers on January 2, 2009 under Mac OS X Leopard

While the Leopard’s Dock is a amazingly useful tool, it can be rather unforgiving if you have a mishap. For example, I was dragging the photos from Christmas to a folder on my Dock. I missed the folder and now I have a tiny Dock with very tiny icons. Such a mess is a major pain to clean up by removing each image (or file) from the dock. There is an easier way.

Leopard: The Easy Way to Make an Alias

contributed by Rob Rogers on December 29, 2008 under Mac OS X Leopard

An alias functions in much the same way as a Windows shortcut. It provides an icon that points to the original file and this icon can be placed anywhere (in a stack on the dock, the desktop, etc) while requiring minimal storage space. Using the File –> Make Alias method takes a little more effort than I like, since not ony do you have to select the items from the menu, you have to clean up the alias name so that it no longer includes the word “alias.”
